Vihang A. Naik throws light on the life of a city in all its shades, glory and misery in his City Times and Other Poems. It is an anthology of his intuitive and philosophical poems. The Poems are divided in 6 segmentsi.e. ‘Love Song of a Journey Man’ is more or less an inner travelogue, The segments, for instance, ‘Mirrored Man’ is about the other chimeras in the city .The people in the city are capricious like the walk of a crab or the colours of a chameleon. While, ‘The Path of Wisdom’ is about the beginning of meditation and knowledge. ‘At the Shore’ records the poet’s sense of futility, memory, pain, exile and alienation at the shore of life. The title of this collection is also the heading for the last of its six sections, in which the city is unfolded as a market place, as a heaven for underdogs, and as a seed bed of change and is observed at evening, at mid-night, by moon light and through fog and haze.

There s a beautiful quote which says “Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”

The title of the book, ‘city times’ gives you a hint that the entire poetry revolves around the city and the peoples associated with it.

As we know “A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time”,

The book is divided into six divisions-

●Love Song of a Journeyman ●Mirrored Man ●The Path of Wisdom ●Self Portrait ●At The Shore ●City Times

The first section deals with one’s life journey. The emotions which we feel while travelling life can be vividly experienced through this section. Your upholding beautifully describes the first journey of our life. Even the poem you broke petals has a very interesting moral to teach us. “I stood there to perceive the sides of a coin”

Mirrored Man is about what we are. The name itself suggests a comparison between our views and qualities. Both the poems Spiders may have and not only crab walks defines us the title of the section.  Even the comparison of chameleon with humans was too good. Indeed we change colours for our own benefit. We do claim that we do several charitable things for others, but if we see ourselves at the mirror, we will find we do everything for our own benefit.

The path of wisdom is the philosophical section. It deals with what life teaches us. Starting from Patience, love, self esteem we have shades of wisdom and silence. I loved each and every poem from this area and especially,” listen, Death knocks”. It is beautifully crafted with the hues of both death and live.

Self portrait makes us to believe in ourselves. In this 21st century of earth’s existence we still have faith in others rather than us. “Wake up to see myself”. The poet passes on a very beautiful message henceforth. He tells us to wake up and stop blindly believing in someone. Wake up and have faith in yourself.

The next section is purely an emotional one. Sea shore is the place where we find all our emotions. Be it happiness or loneliness, the sea shore has every human emotions attached to it. All the emotions referred in the book, distance, illusion, desire, pleasure, voice and eyes are all blended with the sea shore. The way the poet has described the sea shore in context with the human emotion simply leaves no more words to describe it more.

The last category “the city times” deals with the city people and the situations they encounter. For instance, the poem evening describes the evening scene of a city. We always say that nature can be best observed near countryside or village, but the author proved nature can be felt from city too.

Overall the collection of poems made be spellbound.

I wished if the poet could pen down a few of his creativity in the Self portrait section. The cover could have been made more illustrative. Apart from these, I really enjoyed the city journey.

‘he is different behind his words of cream and butter’.

Overall I would like to rate the book 45 on a scale of 50.

5 stars out of 5

Originality of the plot and sub plots- 9/10

Net emotions in the story- 9/10

Usage of words and phrases-9.5/10

The title, cover and the illustration-8/10

The net impact on the readers- 9.5/10

Overall, it’s worth reading.

The reason is very obvious-
